Ending An All-Nighter in Pattaya

In Marine I was trolling but given we were all pretty plowed I was gravitating towards girls with good dance moves. Went through about 3 of them before I locked horns with a cutie I recognized from the Coyote bar new Club Boesche.
She had great moves, dressed well and loved to makeout. Sounds good to me. We drank a few and then moved on to Insomnia.

It was 5:00 in the morning. or somewhere around there, and I had no idea what to do. Then the girl asked if I had hotel. Actually I do not since the party rooms where in full swing and I knew there was no place to hide. She said no problem and we rode a motorcycle taxi to some out of the norm soi where we got a room for 400 baht. She made sure she could sleep in the room until 3 pm that day. Another great pull, good value and just a fun girl.

We fell asleep and I awoke to my phone ringing. One of the crew was looking for me assuming I had probably fallen asleep in a short time hotel. Indeed I had. Fortunately I did not sleep long enough to induce my impending hangover but was still buzzing....

A Katoey Experience

On entering Cascades I was pleasantly surprised how big the place was. We take a seat and order drinks. What surprised me even more was how long it took my Thai wife to realize these were all ladyboys, most of them really do look stunning. Been thai I thought she would click on straight away but she didn't, these Katoeys have come on leaps and bounds over the years.

Pretty soon we are approached by hopefuls and the voices are the big give away, the penny drops and I produce my best expression of total surprise.
Within minutes we are joined by 3 ladyboys and my missus is loving it, chatting, joking and ordering drinks.....shit.
The main subject was breast implants, a topic me and the wife had been recently discussing (for her benefit of course) and it turns out it can be done for 45,000baht, alot cheaper than I had found on the internet.
Over the next 15 minutes I am feeling silicone breasts, with the encouragement of wifey, to decide on which would be the best size.
Bizarre.

Over the next 2 hours I am informed, via my wife, which ladyboy has the biggest cock in the place, who gets the most business...she is actually numbered #1 and has been known to be bar fined up to 4 times in one night.
How many work there...approximately 100 ladyboys and while all this is going on I've got some dude in a bikini sat next to me asking for short time while my missus is busy chatting.
What the wife didn't twig on to was the fact 'why they were been so friendly' was due to the constant rounds of drinks been ordered.

The Baron Returns

I was in Nana Plaza last night seeing if anything had changed. The answer is, of course, not a lot. You just realise how awful the place looks if you have been absent for a while.
Everybody is moaning about customer levels, which is hardly surprising! What can you expect if you charge 135 Baht a beer in a sh*t hole full of bored girls.

Bangkok’s current gogo dancers that merely shuffle around a pole, and look bored. Mind you, you would too if you had to do the shuffle bit for 6 hours a night.

Soi Eden has a lot going for it. Apart from the variety of nightlife in such a small area, it also benefits from the lack of traffic, meaning you and the ubiquitous elephants can wander around without risking injury or inhaling exhaust fumes.

On the night of my visit, a drunken farang decided it would be a good idea to ride a baby elephant. Happily, he fell off.

Election Time in Bangkok

Bars were open on the 18th and 19th. Apparently intoxicated voters are more acceptable if it’s just a referendum being voted on.
Police were out tonight rounding up Freelancers on Suk Soi 4 and the Nana Hotel Parking Lot.
I guess they needed some extra cash.
Weird seeing no Freelancers on the street. It was like a bad dream. An hour later the Police were gone and the little Angels returned to their posts.

Updates from Dean Barrett

Nana Update:
Nana Plaza was reaaaallly slow when I was there. There was more action among the stray cats on the roofs than in the bars.

Pattaya Update:
A number of clubs had some pretty dancers and Walking Street really does pick up about 11 p.m. It is amazing though how few women are about during the day even into the late afternoon and then whamo! some time after dark like magic they're all over the place.

(Dean's friend is a fast operator, picking up a Hello Girl right away.)

Suzie Wong - Speaking of Tongues

I took a bi gf to see the Suzie Wong show a couple of months ago. Arranged to take out the best looking girl we saw, who we had just seen with her tongue in two other girls. When we got back to my room, she tells us she is 'not really into girls' and that it is all an act. Major disappointment….

With another friend there recently, and I told him the show must be well rehearsed 'cos the girls are constantly moving in sync into new positions without communicating, to which he replied that they must be 'speaking in tongues'….

Pattaya Update

It might be quiet at this time of year but there are some major developments steaming ahead in Pattaya that will play a part in the gradual, but very definite change in the face of Thailand's naughtiest beach resort. The large multi-building complex on the Second Road, opposite the Lek Hotel, is a shopping centre not dis-similar to the Big C complex at the north Pattaya end of Second Road. This new complex which is home to a 24 hour branch of McDonalds and a Major Cineplex, both of which are open already.

Also under construction, the even bigger Central shopping centre on the Beach Road is not going ahead quite so fast, but when finished that it has got to contribute towards giving Pattaya something of a more legitimate feel.

But despite all of these developments being erected at a furious pace, Pattaya remains awfully quiet and as has been reported for a number of weeks now, the bars are really hurting. Waking Street's trade isn't helped by evening drizzle which keeps punters in restaurants, and out of the bars. Entrepreneurial locals are selling umbrellas along Walking Street for 200 baht. The same thing will set you back 99 baht in Bangkok's Pratunam Market.

Tulip Review

The rooms are smallish, with a low single bed, and a shower behind a curtain. I sent for hot tea and cold water, and disrobed - noting with approval the groovy hatstand in the corner. My girlfriend for the next two hours then got just as naked, and took me into the shower for a thorough scrub. Luxury.

A quick dry-off, a sip of tea, and onto the bed where I was instructed to lie on my front, as she began the usual oil massage. Decent enough, but nothing compared to what was coming later....

Could the "hello girls" at the top of the escalator at Nana Plaza please stop physically assaulting me every time I ascend? Thanks.

Two Fat Farangs Leaving Pattaya

It goes without saying that Pattaya has its unsavoury side, and murders and suicides occur on an almost daily basis, sure, but you never hear about the amount of successful love stories that happen every day, or the sense of community spirit amongst the expat community.
With a population of over a quarter million people you’re going to have to take the rough with the smooth.

My only regrets about Pattaya is that I didn’t find it when I was in my twenties. Now, in some ways, the place seems a little wasted on me. All too often I clock a girl who takes my breath away. Literally. Just the mere thought of having to try and satisfy her leaves me short of breath.

I’ve had my heart broken a few times here, but these days I’d like to think that I’m a little more careful. It’s all too easy to think that the next one is “the one”, but it’s impossible for things to remain as sweet as they are in those first few months of courtship, so move on quickly, I say, with as little emotion as possible.

Running a bar has to be kept as stress-free as possible, so I’m always sure to keep my emotions and hormones in check. If any urges overcome me I just slide out for a soapy massage down the road.

It’s never going to make me rich this bar, I know. It ticks over and that’s good enough for me. I’ve got a cosy little flat upstairs, and about every other day Pu sends one of the girls up to clean up after me or do my laundry. I’m spoiled really.

Apart from the obvious differences in beauty, Western and Asian females are like two entirely different species. That’s not to say that all Asian ladies are perfect, far from it, but the percentage that pride themselves on taking care of their man far outnumbers the amount of western females who once upon time used to also share the same qualities......

(This was John's feelings at the beginning of the year. Since then he has found his Thai country girl, sold the bar in Pattaya, and is trying to buy a house in Udon so he can help with her college education. (See Shy Thai Girls)
His partner, Will, is content being on top of some mountain meditating.)

In their archives there is some interesting interviews they did.
And the infamous letter from John Eke, which states "There will be a 28 period where all foreigners will be given chance to leave, after that we will be arrested and deported within another 28 day period. After that all farangs will be shot on the spot."

Check them out before its gone entirely.

Pompooey

One Thai girlfriend once told me that the term “pompooey” refers to little children or babies and has a rather positive connotation”. In TV-Ads in Thailand that show products for babies, these babies are usually overweight from a western point of view, but obviously Thai people consider that as very healthy. I also observed this in advertisements in China, where obviously overweight babies are also considered cute and healthy.

As far as I know the term “wan” really means “fat” and really having a rather negative connotation.

So if a Thai girl calls me Pompooey I usually try to think she is telling me I am cute.

Ahh Nana .......

Some years ago, I was sitting in the Golden Bar outside the Nana Hotel. It is a great place to observe the lunacy going on over the road around Nana Plaza. I was chatting to an American at the side of the bar nearest the road when an elephant approached us. It had a harmonica in its trunk and proceeded to play “When the saints go marching in” without a note out of place. That scale of surrealism only happens in Bangkok.

The Good Ol' Days

Remember the days before the re-model at Angelwitch where the dancers would rush right behind your back as you were taking a leak?
Turns out the girls had to go through the men's room to get to their changing room in those days.
You could peek in through the door next to the john and see them lathering up for the next stage performance.
Check out the video.

What Sex Trade?

While Thailand is infamous for its sex industry, it does not officially exist. Bars and clubs in Bangkok, Phuket and Pattaya, which offer both men and women for sex, are not recognized by police as sex venues, provided they pay their monthly stipends to the police.

The Wai Means Respect

The wai means respect. It's not a general friendly greeting.

Much like a military salute, the wai is more than a greeting, it is a gesture of respect offered by the lesser to his elder or superior. Every Thai seems to automatically sense and known his place in society versus everyone else around him. Exactly who pro-offers the wai and who answers it is extremely important. This is an aspect of Thailand that few foreigners can ever fully understand. It is generally best for foreigners to refrain from wai-ing at all. However, a pro-offered wai should always be acknowledged. It is perfectly acceptable to answer a wai with a verbal greeting (sawadee, kap), a bob of the head or a gentle wave of the hand. The hand wave is particularly effective in that it says don’t wai me. I’m just an ordinary guy.

Generally speaking, there are very few instances where a foreigner would pro-offer a wai. Inexperienced foreigners tend to wai everyone. This generally brings on more ridicule than respect. For example, an adult never wais a child, even in reply. Nor should a foreigner reply with a wai to service personnel like a hotel doorman, maid, waiter or other workmen. At the same time, all such wais should be acknowledged in some way. A simple smile or nod of acknowledgment is often sufficient.

At the same time, every foreigner should be aware of those special situations where he should answer a wai with a wai of his own. For example, the Thais generally show extreme respect to the elderly. Thai society is replete with exchanges that acknowledge the older/younger, greater/lesser, pee/nong status of the meeting pair.

One situation where a foreigner should answer a wai with a wai is when it is pro-offered by someone clearly older. The older Thai is acknowledging the foreigner’s exalted status.
