Ladyboy Go-Go Bars in Nana Plaza, 2014

Some of the more interesting photos lately to come out of Nana Plaza
in Bangkok has been the promo shots from some of the Ladyboy bars
like Cascade and Obsessions.  Katoey anyone?

(Please note that Cascade is now called Charades and
Obsessions is now called True Obsession due to some legal thing.)

It looks a bit dated, I recognized the Hog's Breath girls.

Sawat Dee Bee Mai… Happy New Year!

An Early Report of New Years Eve at Nana Plaza:
It was about 9 pm, so I figured I’d check out the action around Nana. I had a drink in Fantasia, but it was lame. I walked into G-spot and back out. I went upstairs and had a look at Carousel and Hollywood, but they were empty. Rainbow 3 was a ghost-town with three dancers on stage and no customers. The bars on the ground floor (at least the outdoor beer bars) were rocking, and Mandarin Club had been busier than usual, but everywhere else I went was deathly quiet.

Maybe it would pick up later, but between 9:00 and 9:30 it was death valley in these bars.

Another Nana Plaza Update:
It is true: some bars at Nana have made the move to let us say less apparel - and more! The Mandarin Bar upstairs girls seem to have forgotten their skivvies and seem to have forgotten to button their blouses. Shades of Baccara and Erotica! Hollywood now has some good shows involving showers and very scantily clad women (and very good looking women) indeed.
Angelwitch, the bar I believe who dared start the trend, is also right up there in the why not show a bit above the waist category and as always the shows are daring and fun. Angelwitch, even on a Sunday, was doing fine for business.

Nana Plaza - Hollywood 2 Update

Hollywood 2, that's the smaller of the Hollywood bars, is very much lacking in numbers of girls, but surprisingly the girls they do have are pleasant on the eye.
You also may get a chance to see things not seen for a while in Nana... nudge, nudge, wink, wink!
Apparently it is up to the girls to choose the amount of coverage, ranging from bikini top, to stars, to no stars.
Beer runs a very reasonable 100 baht.

The Baron Returns

I was in Nana Plaza last night seeing if anything had changed. The answer is, of course, not a lot. You just realise how awful the place looks if you have been absent for a while.
Everybody is moaning about customer levels, which is hardly surprising! What can you expect if you charge 135 Baht a beer in a sh*t hole full of bored girls.

Bangkok’s current gogo dancers that merely shuffle around a pole, and look bored. Mind you, you would too if you had to do the shuffle bit for 6 hours a night.

Soi Eden has a lot going for it. Apart from the variety of nightlife in such a small area, it also benefits from the lack of traffic, meaning you and the ubiquitous elephants can wander around without risking injury or inhaling exhaust fumes.

On the night of my visit, a drunken farang decided it would be a good idea to ride a baby elephant. Happily, he fell off.

Updates from Dean Barrett

Nana Update:
Nana Plaza was reaaaallly slow when I was there. There was more action among the stray cats on the roofs than in the bars.

Pattaya Update:
A number of clubs had some pretty dancers and Walking Street really does pick up about 11 p.m. It is amazing though how few women are about during the day even into the late afternoon and then whamo! some time after dark like magic they're all over the place.

(Dean's friend is a fast operator, picking up a Hello Girl right away.)

Rant of the Week

Could the "hello girls" at the top of the escalator at Nana Plaza please stop physically assaulting me every time I ascend? Thanks.

Ahh Nana .......

Some years ago, I was sitting in the Golden Bar outside the Nana Hotel. It is a great place to observe the lunacy going on over the road around Nana Plaza. I was chatting to an American at the side of the bar nearest the road when an elephant approached us. It had a harmonica in its trunk and proceeded to play “When the saints go marching in” without a note out of place. That scale of surrealism only happens in Bangkok.

The Good Ol' Days

Remember the days before the re-model at Angelwitch where the dancers would rush right behind your back as you were taking a leak?
Turns out the girls had to go through the men's room to get to their changing room in those days.
You could peek in through the door next to the john and see them lathering up for the next stage performance.
Check out the video.

Good Times at the Mandarin

Then I headed for Mandarin. The old one - not the new table dance one. It was awesome. One of the owners was playing DJ and it was great. Reminded me of being in a good US strip club with a good DJ and girls really moving. For about 2 hours the place was throbbing, the girls were having fun and I was rubbing up with some cuties. Mandarin seems to be pretty consistent as of late and has some nice girls.

FYI. As I am writing this post the new security cameras to the entrance of Nana Plaza are now installed. I have no idea who is managing them to be honest.

Now Open Until 2 AM

Now the go-go clubs and beer bars in Bangkok can stay open until 2 am, a good chance for all of you nite owls to check out some of the newer dance routines at Angelwitch. Last time I was there this is when they tried out the new stage shows.
(I personally will miss the old school Thai dance parties and celebrations which use to take place at Hog's Breath from 1 to 2 am. Everyone was welcomed to step in and dance along to the old Thai songs.)
Thanks for the update from Dave The Rave.

Stickman comments....

In some bar areas, particularly Nana Plaza, the bars are much tamer than they were 5 years ago. Back then there were dance contests, really raunchy dance contests and bars would do record trade those nights. The legendary Nanapong dance contests of 2000 and 2001 packed out the largest venues and guys around the world were known to plan their whole holiday around the date of such contests....

The girls these days are businesswomen. Don't misunderstand that. Just because they are young, and pretty and don't speak good English doesn't mean that they're not shrewd operators...

Found this on Bangkok Bad Boy's site. Added some music to make the viewing more enjoyable. (This may not stay up for a longtime, so enjoy video for short-time.)

Discussing Ketchup in Foodland?

In Foodland one morning, I ate breakfast beside a dismal old git who had pulled an absolute stunner. She was probably a Nana Plaza showgirl. A chum describes these mismatched couples as "pro-celebrity golf" - and it's not too difficult to work out which one is the pro. She'd probably quoted him three times the going rate but some masochists won't be deterred.

In response to her unsmiling wall of silent contempt, he started clutching at conversational straws.

To indicate his fondness for tomato ketchup, he picked up the bottle, licked his lips and patted his belly. "Mmmmmm," he enthused. Next, he pointed at the Tabasco Sauce and started panting like a dog and fanning his mouth with his hand.

I've never been a great fan of condiment-related mime and there were more than a dozen sauce bottles standing on the counter so I decided to skip the rest of his performance by asking for the bill.
(More on this, check out Dave at Mango Sauce.)

Short Time

I sat next to a sullen looking pole performer in one of Nana Plaza’s top pleasure palaces. I got chatting as you do and asked her why she looked quiet and sultry. Miss Nok explained that her “sponsor” had ended the relationship. And so, I asked Nok, “Do you have a broken heart?” Nok replied, “No, I have broken bank.”

Nana Coming to Life

The Bangkok Nana Plaza go-go dancers arrive in their street clothes and street makeup, walk by, eyeing the potential customers (and being eyed by them) and heading for their respective bars. Many stopped to wai the Buddhist and Brahman shrines, some lit incense or bought garlands or fruit from nearby vendors to place on the shrines. Others stood about deeply engrossed in cellphone conversations, no doubt assuring men overseas that, no, they definitely were not working in the bars anymore so please keep those checks and wire transfers coming.

Hog's Breath Is Sold - Changes to Come

Sources tell me that The Hog's Breath Saloon at Nana Plaza was sold on January 10th, 2007.

This will be a great blow to all of the ex-pats and regular patrons who relied on this establishment as a meeting place to discuss their sex addiction, alcoholism, and their game of golf with a few beers.

Maybe Bob and his wife are dancing with relief.
(See what Dave The Rave has to say.)

photographs by Randy Magnus

Here is an update from Dean Barrett on Hog's Breath:
It was sad to see Bob and his friends carrying out the interior items from the Hog's Breath in Nana Plaza - deer antlers, boar's head, boxes, etc. Bob had the bar for God knows how many years and finally under financial pressure from a bank had to sell. Rumor-Control Headquarters has it that the wall between the Boar's Head and Spanky's will be torn down thereby creating a bar in which at least two customers and two dancers can cram inside at the same time. Apparently, Bob still will carry on his free Sunday chili as well as golf tournaments, etc., but based in the tiny Tavern Pub just down the street on soi 4 which also according to Rumor-Control Headquarters might knock out a wall to take over the hair dresser's thereby creating a pub in which at least two or three customers can sit down at once. Perhaps if this trend continues someday one entire floor of Nana Plaza will be one big bar. A friend of mine went by the old Hog's Breath the next night and a girl outside said, yes, it is open, and sure enough inside were three customers drinking despite no dancers and no decor. I guess go go bars never die; they just get carried away.
